On March 1, the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development announced over $40 million in grants to fight housing and lending discrimination. CRLA is proud to be the recipient of two grants, amounting to $525,000 in total contributions.
The awards are funded through HUD's Fair Housing Initiative Program. The awards will be used by CRLA and other organizations and agencies to investigate allegations of housing discrimination, educate the public and the housing industry about their rights and responsibilities under the Fair Housing Act, and work to promote equal housing opportunities.
John Trasviña, Assistant Secretary for Fair Housing & Equal Opportunity at the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development, stated "Ending housing discrimination takes more than the efforts of Washington. These grants enable community groups all over the nation to help HUD enforce the Fair Housing Act, make the public more aware of their fair housing rights and ensure that housing providers understand their responsibilities under the law."
Assistant Secretary Trasviña recently served as the keynote speaker for CRLA's 2011 LGBT Housing Discrimination Conference entitled "Increasing Access to Fair Housing for LGBT Communities through New HUD Initiatives and Community and State Agency Collaboration."
